ATHENS, Greece -- Japan, the nation that invented judo, won the first two gold medals in the event Saturday.
Ryoko Tani defended her Olympic title by beating France's Frederique Jossinet in the women's 48kg final, while Tadahiro Nomura won his third consecutive gold medal in the men's 60kg.
Tani, who was known as Ryoko Tamura until she married Japanese baseball player Yoshitomo Tani late last year, also won silver medals in 1996 and 1992.
